Hs everyone forgotten Marshall McLuhan? The medium IS the message. If you're a newspaper, your news is going to be different than what's broadcast or published online...your choice of what to cover, how you cover it and how you write it.
Learn the right lesson from the music industry and don't ignore the fundamental product. The album was an art form, above and beyond the basic tracks. Yet, the music industry sacrificed it for cheap packaging that simply invited competition from online music sharing.
The same holds true for newspapers. Forget online, or at most, just mirror your print edition online. Publish a quality newspaper with quality reporting. Make each edition something worth waiting for.
As for Google, if news is important to them, let 'em hire their own news staff. Otherwise, forget about it.
